    Question:
Chain does not turn with brake in the off position
    Details:

I just bought a new Husqvarna 450 (model #966906738) and after a second cut, less than 3 minutes into first use, the chain stopped turning, the engine sounded like the brake had been activate, but the bar was still back.  I pushed the bar forward and no change. I pulled the bar back and no change. I have turned it off and restarted it twice, with no change.  When moving the bar between unlocked and locked, there is a fairly loud "plasticy" popping noise. Obviously I'm very frustrated my work has come to a stop 3 minutes into using my new saw, so your help is appreciated.

Does sounds like the brake is releasing so you should be able remove the chain brake cover and check the chain for binding. If the chain brake is hard to get get off then the brake hasn't release for some reason and the saw needs checking by the dealer.

      Richard,

You can also try pulling on the chain with a gloved hand, and obviously with the engine shut off and Not running. If the chain moves freely on the bar, then the brake is Not on or engaged, then you can remove the clutch cover. However, If you cannot move the chain freely then the brake is Engaged, and DO NOT try to remove the clutch cover or you may damage components inside the clutch cover.

As Eugene already suggested If the brake is engaged, then the clutch cover will not come off normally, and you should take it to a Dealer for assistance in removing the clutch cover, and fixing the brake.

I hope this helps, and Is not to late of Information,

      Karla

      Richard,

One other thought, after watching your video is that it almost looks like the clutch cover was never completely put into place, and this could be because of a couple of reasons: So here is what I would suggest rather than trying to take the clutch cover off if the brake is engaged or On, Try removing the bar nuts, then lay the chainsaw on its side so that the clutch cover is on top, with a small amount of pressure, Maybe about 10-20 pounds of body force, NOT Your entire body weight push down on the clutch cover, at the small rounded area of the clutch cover which will be at the top front of the chainsaw. If you get a little movement of the cover inward, then operate the brake handle by pushing it forward, and then pulling it back, like you did in the video. This may release the brake band inside the clutch cover. You can verify it by again just pulling on the chain, if the chain moves then simply remove the clutch cover.

Now, to the reason that the clutch cover may not have been installed all of the way, which you will see when you remove the clutch cover, and bar, and chain. You may have a "Shipping Part" which was to be removed when the bar and chain were installed, Its a plastic washer like piece some are rectangular, and fit over the bar bolts, Also should have the words "Discard" on it. If this was left in place by the chainsaw supplier, then the clutch cover will go on but won't operate the brake properly. The other possible choice If you don't find this "Shipping spacer" is that some brake component has possibly failed and broken limiting the operation of your brake handle.

Again, I hope this Helps, and that the Info is Not to late for you to correct the problem,

      Karla
