    Question:
I recently purchased a Rancher 460 with a 24" bar. It doesn't seem like the chain is getting enough oil. I have the oiler control set on the maximum of 3 and a full oil tank has about 1/4 left when a full tank of gas is burned. I guess this is normal but the chain seems awfully dry and I see no oil coming off the chain when run above a stump to check for oil. The oil holes in the bar are clean and so are the side cover and bar mounting surface. Any ideas?

Thank you for using the AnswerARMY.

Your description of the amount left in the oil tank is very close to what this should be.

Sometimes the type of wood along with the SAP in the wood ( sticks to the chain ) will make the chain very dry.

The test to see if the unit is oiling is to run the saw above a piece of clean cardboard, this should produce lines of oil being slung off the chain. Seeing this is an indication the saw is oiling correctly.

The 24" inch bar is not recommended for the 460 Chainsaw and also requires more oil that the 20" or 18" that are recommended for this model.

If you have further concerns your local authorized service dealer should be able to determine if the saw is oiling correctly.

Scott, I have this bar on my 455 Rancher, and it seems to oil just fine, of course I don't overwork my 24" bar, and just let the bar and chain do its cutting at its own pace, and I do have a lot of respect for a large chain and bar.
