    Question:
How do I decode the serial numbers on chainsaws? Most of what I have and work on are pre-1995. Is there any publication I can obtain to decode all the numbers from the 70s thru current?

Thanks for the question. The first number on the older saws is the last number of the year. Here is an example 510263. That serial would make this saw a 1985 or 95 year model depending on the color of the top of the saw made in the tenth week of the year. We have used three colors thru the years. The 70's are white. the 80's are black and the 90's till present are orange. We started using double digits in 2000. Those serial numbers start with 00. So a 2008 model would be 0812345.

Thanks Chip, that does help. Sometime when ordering parts I run into a year breakdown and am at a loss. This info is of great value to me.

I am the owner of a Husqvarna 51, 61, 257, 350 and am heading to another sale this weekend to look at a couple more. All are in great working order. My wife thinks I'm nuts but that is nothing new. "How many tools must one man have?" ......"All of them".

Great forum, lots of helpful direction! I too have a similar serial number question-

I recently bought a 266se chainsaw from a fellow. He said it was mid 80's model, but it does have an orange top. S/N is 5354584. Any clue as to wheat her or not that's an 80's or 90's style serial #?

Thanks, and again- great site for husky help!
