    Question:
I have a problem with my Husqvarna 562XP. While cutting a tree today I noticed that the chain needed to be tightened. I've done this numerous times but today the chain guard locked up. I seem to remember reading somewhere that you shouldn't engage the brake while adjusting the chain, and I'm not sure if that what I did or not. Now I can't get the brake to disengage and the front nut won't tighten. How do I fix it???

      Glenn,

In theory the brake should have nothing to do with the chain tensioner, because the brake band just holds the clutch drum stationary, and the chain tensioner just moves the bar forward and back. However the Clutch cover has the brake band built inside the cover, and there in lies the rub, you must be able to loosen the clutch cover by loosening the bar nuts, but If brake band is engaged then you will Not be able to loosen the clutch cover, and will Not be able to adjust tension.

So your correct, you should not engage the brake when adjusting the tension. Now to fix the problem, you will need to get the brake dis-engaged, So rather than trying to get the bar nuts loose, and removing the clutch cover, try and push the clutch cover back on so that you can get the brake dis-engaged.

First. If you lay the chainsaw over on its side, so that the clutch cover is facing up. Then  where the brake handle (black plastic handle) goes into the clutch cover push straight down with a little bit of force on the clutch cover, and while holding the clutch cover onto the chainsaw, move the brake handle all the way forward, and the pull back on the handle. This should release the brake band and put it into the dis-engaged position. Now you should be able to easily loosen the bar nuts, remove the clutch cover, and remove the bar and chain.

The second part of your problem that the bar nut will not tighten.  After the clutch cover, bar and chain are removed, then inspect both the bar nut and bar stud, you may have a stripped the bar nut or bar stud and it will need to be replaced.

I hope the above Information makes sense, and If you need additional help then please let me Know.

      Glenn,

Just Follow-up & curious If you resolved the problem with your Model 562 ? Were you able to get the clutch cover/ brake band reset and remove cover ?
