    Question:
Is there any difference between the Husqvarna riding mowers that are sold at Lowes (or other 'big box' stores) versus the ones sold through an authorized dealer? Rumors to that effect are all over the web but I have not been able to confirm it either way. I also noticed that several similar questions in these forums have gone unanswered for years. Do the big box stores sell a cheaper version of lower quality manufacturing than the same model offered by dealers?

From what I see in the IPLs they are the same. It just that getting service is a lot harder through the big box stores. With them having to send them off for repairs. With a local full service dealer you level customer service is much better most times. Also a lot local dealers will not service those big box store mowers under warranty.

I am independent small shop owner which gets these mower after the warranty periods are up or after the customer has given on the big box stores service departments failure to repair their problems.

Thanks for the response, Eugene.  Since you are an independent small shop owner, may I ask your opinion about the differences between the Kawasaki, Briggs & Stratton and Kohler engines?  Are the mowers with the Kawasaki engines a wiser choice even though they are a bit more expensive?  I realize opinions differ greatly, but the consensus seems to be that Kawasaki engines have a better track record than the other two.

Of the three I would rank the Kawasaki first then Kohler, and finally Briggs. They all are good engines but I do see more Briggs than anything else in the shop mostly due their popularity. So it kinda unfairly for judge to others as good or bad based on my personal experiences.

One thing I do know is nearly all the John Deere mowers are using Kawasaki but JD is partial to them as have stake in the Kawasaki engines but they do use a few Kohlers and Briggs too; all with good results.
