    Question:
I have a 5521P walk-behind lawnmower that I purchased less than 9 months ago. After our winter (I live in Florida so grass hasn't grown for the past few months) I went to start up the mower and it just will not start. I've checked air filter, put in some "liquid mechanic" cleaner, fresh gas and checked the spark plug and can't seem to get the thing started. Any advice on what I should check to get it to start?

Appears you may have a Briggs with auto choke. It is possible that the choke isn't closing properly.

Try this if you have tools to remove the spark plug. Remove the plug and spuirt some raw fuel into the cylinder, put the plug back in (tighten of course), and see if it will now start and runs. If it does then the auto choke is needing adjusting at least.

Thanks for the response!  I tried this and the engine actually did turn over and ran for a couple seconds before cutting out again.  How do I go about adjusting the auto choke?

From your test results it not going to be the auto-choke. It sounds more like the main jet or or the float needle valve is plugged up. Basically it sounds like the carburetor needs a good cleaning. This something I see a lot of with today's fuels.

Can you recommend a good carb cleaner and the best way to effectively apply it into the carb, or is disassembling the carb completely and cleaning it all out my only option?

Sorry not able to recommend a carburetor cleaner. I haven't used that short cut since 2008. Here in my shop they all get disassemble and ultrasonic cleaned using soap and water.

Personally when I did I had more problems because of them then they fixed. And I still get them in the shop where others have tried and failed using these cleaners.
