    Question:
I have a 21" push mower with 675 series Kohler engine. It is a Craftsman brand, but Craftsman told me that Husqvarna made it. I tried contacting Craftsman for an answer to my question but they couldn't help me.

Here is the question: Is an initial oil change after the first 3-5 hours required? It is NOT mentioned in the owner's mower manual, which I thought was odd. Does Husqvarna break-in the engine and change the oil before shipping?

No Husqvarna doesn't break in the engines. To be on the safe side change the initial oil at 5 hours which what we do on most rebuilds here in my shop. It just to made sure if metal shaving is left is washed out but factory built engines are usually cleaned very well as they better cleaning booths.

Thanks Eugene. If that initial oil change is required then it's not too good that it isn't mentioned in the manual. Certainly wouldn't give me a lot of confidence in purchasing equipment from Craftsman or Husqvarna again. I'm going to go ahead and change the oil this weekend and see how metallic looking or not it is.

Well, so I changed the oil...and guess what? Lots of tiny, shiny, bits of metal in the oil. I'm still mystified as to why the owner's manual mentions nothing about this initial oil change.
