Question:
When I see "recommended bar length", what does that mean exactly?
Can I go 24"on a 20 recommended bar length?
Can I go 18" on a 20" recommended bar length?
Also, is heavier better than lighter for the same displacement and horsepower?
Thanks for your time.
Answer
You can always go shorter but going longer depends if the saw in question has an adjustable oil or not. Those with non-adjustable pumps will have oiling problems.
As for your question heavier or lighter that need a little more clarafication.

Thanks for your time.
The reference to weight and displacement was a little screwy. I was just wondering, for the same horsepower/displacement machine, is a heavier one preferred over a lighter one, overall weight of the machine. For instance I see in the model listing the 450 series, three machines with the same displacement and horsepower. Two them are 11.2 pounds, the third is 10.8 pounds. Not a lot of difference I know but just wondering what's the most popular. I'm thinking, a half pound over the course of a couple hours of cutting will add up, but does the heavier machine do a little more work for you?

That difference is probably in the bar and chain used. There standard kerf type bars and chains and there is the Pixel (narrow kerf) bar and chains.
I would think the Pixel would actually do better as you're cutting (removing) less wood vs a Standard kerf cut but it is more prone pinching on unsupported wood cuts.
