Why is there grease on the underside of the top cover of the 450 Rancher that I just purchased?
Details:
I just purchased a Rancher 450. I took the top cover off and found a fair amount of grease on the underside. My urge is to clean it off, but I thought I'd ask first. Is there a purpose for the grease being there?
After some thought I suspect the grease is meant to be there. I can tell that it was purposely applied. It looks like it might be a heat tolerant grease that is used to seal the edge between the cover and the saw
I would clean the grease off. It doesn't belong there, someone or a machine just got too generous with the grease.
The greased parts should be the brake band leakage inside the clutch cover, and only a small finger tip worth of grease on there. Then the clutch bearing inside the sprocket drum should be greased, and definitely NO grease in the clutch or between the drum sprocket and clutch, that should be dry and clean. Also the outside of the drum sprocket should always be kept dry and clean, that is the part which makes contact with the brake band.
I hope this helps, and please let me know if you need additional information
