Question:
I have a z246 zero turn. I have posted the problem: The mower blade spindle will not take grease. did the grease fitting replacement and deducted that the issue is in the mandrel. the mower is 3 months old and under warranty but i already purchased an oem madrel and the spindle came with it. question is how to i change the madrel? the 4 holes are not threaded. do i use the existing 4 screws to self tap into the new madrel? can i actually tap new threads with a tap and die set? I thought about just replacing the spindle portion but what if the grease defect is in the mandrel since i was told the mandrel may have but drilled incorrectly. thank you
Answer
The bolts are self tappers 5/16"-18 x 1-1/4". Note some may be only 1" long. Yes you can reuse the bolts if you can them out without them breaking off. Pre-tapping is not necessary but can be done if you wish.
I done have few to break off during installation so I personally pre-tap the spindles here in my shop. Matter of fact I had a Cub Cadet spindle to have a new bolt to break during installation this last week because I didn't fully tap the threads. Lucky that I was to extract the new broken bolt from the 85.00 spindle. Could have been just a defective bolt but it is unnerving to have it happen.
If I remember correctly the grease fitting is in the spindle shaft and that is what I was referring to as may not have been drilled properly or debris from the drilling process is blocking passages. Only an on-site inspection can determine this,

Well finally, project/repair all complete I removed only the spindle not the entire mandrel which was pretty easy. The spindle did not have any obstructions other than the hole was not drill through completely!!! Found this out by checking the depth of the new one compared to the existing one. Just got a drill and completed the hole and the grease was flowing. I have a spare bearing, spindle and mandrel. Guess I could have taken it in since its covered under warranty but the $40 was minimal repair cost.
Thank you so very much for all the correspondence and assistance, could not have done it without you...

thank u sir for all of the advise. i do have a tap and die set and found the 5/16-18 tap so i will do that. so as far as the spindle issue, there may only be a need to rinspect the spindle with even having to take off the mandrel, just take the pulley and blade off and hopefully the spindle will come out? the grease hole should be innthe spindle? the madrel i ordered came with the spindle as well and not knwoinf that, i also ordered a new spindle so i have lots of parts. i am goping to tackle this laster today nand will let u know.
thanx again
