    Question:
Can someone tell me what the function is for the chain guide plates? Are they really needed ? My Husqvarna 65 does not have a safety brake on it.

They provide three things that I know of.

      1. Help align the chain with the sprocket and the bar.
      2. Prevent damage to the aluminum (sometime magnesium) casing from cutter d\hitting the casing.
      3. Provide a positive seal between the bar and the oiler channel.

As not having a safety the IPLs that I looked all show it once had a brake though parts may not be available new anymore. Either or you have a really old unit before they started adding the brake systems.

Thanks for your input Eugene. It seems to me that if you keep an eye on chain tension they are not really needed.
