    Question:
So do all Husqvarna 550 xp’s have a 8 hr lifetime. Mine would not start took to shop quoted $307 to fix. I have only ran the premix fuel from Husqvarna. Not impressed at all. Almost buy a new saw for the repair price. Bought August of 2013. New cylinder and all new gaskets.

      Doug,

Sorry to hear your story, and I have had really good luck with Model 545's & 550's and really like them so I guess I am prejudiced.

I have re-built many of them, so first the Dealer price is Not outrageous to rebuild this chainsaw, It is actually a fair price, (cost of Model 550 parts and labor),  but my only question would be why would you do a total or complete re-build to get it started and running ?

A starting problem would not automatically mean you need to do a complete rebuild, unless this particular repair place doesn't do troubleshooting and testing, and they just automatically rebuild it, which obviously will get it running, sort of like taking your car to a Dealer and he says we will put a new engine in your car. Really !

I enjoy doing the diagnostics for these chainsaws, Certainly 8 hrs is Not enough use on this chainsaw, I have one now that has over 200 hrs on it, and It will be running for many years to come. It sounds like you did everything right based on your description, using pre-mix fuel so I don't believe it is catastrophic that you would need a whole new engine.

I guess a couple of questions that would help me diagnose the problem: During the 8 hours that you did use the chainsaw, How did the chainsaw start , run  and cut wood ?  Did it always start easy, like in one - two pulls ? Did you incur any problems when last using it ?  (Like it quit running in the middle of cutting wood, and then couldn't get it started again ) Has it been sitting for a while (like over 6 months with fuel in it, since you last used it ? Did the Dealer actually say that he looked inside the engine, and you have a scored piston and cylinder ? Or did he just say he could rebuild the engine for $307.- ?

Again, I will be glad to try and help you get your chainsaw running again, But will need more information ? I enjoy doing the diagnostics and forensic diagnostics of chainsaws, Its just a Hobby.

If I can help you. Please let me know. This forumn actually consists of several individuals who try to help solve problems.

The service tech did actually trouble shoot it. He showed me the fine dust that bypassed the air filter and ended up in the carb. He did tear it down and look at piston and cylinder. It wouldn't run half the time. It was a really hard starting saw from the beginning. Hot or cold didnt matter.

      Doug,

Thanks for the update, and yes dirt getting into the intake is Not good, and I am surprised it was getting past the filter. So I assume then that he saw scoring on the intake side of the piston and cylinder. The starting problem is probably contributed to the dirty carburetor which would need to be cleaned, However If the scoring was severe enough that will effect the compression of the engine, which will also make it difficult to start, and would require replacement of the piston and cylinder

I don't think I will be of much help, since it sounds like your Dealer did a good Inspection.

My only recommendations might be to sell it as a parts chainsaw, that doesn't run. Some of these On-line Auction places get almost as much selling the saw, as what you would pay for the repair, and then put the Dollars towards a new replacement.

It also sounds like this chainsaw had problems from the beginning.

If I can be of any further help. Please let me know.
