It is upsetting that you have had this problem, although I do believe you found the answer already.
The paper air filter is porous and that is how it breathes through the pores, if the air filter gets oil on it the oil swells the paper causing the pores to close or restrict. This causes the unit to run rich ergo the black smoke. At some time either the unit is over filled with engine oil or it has been tilted filter down. Ideally the only way the unit is to be tilted is spark plug high.
You will likely need a replacement air filter Husqvarna part number is 531 30 10 12. Make sure to check your engine oil level as you may have lost some.
Hi Scott,
Thanks for the response. Who should I call for a complimentary replacement air filter? You mention the the ideal way for the unit to be tilted is spark plug high, but the Husqvarna User Manual for the HU800HW mower states two different tilting methods:
TO REMOVE BLADE - Page 10 - Turn lawn mower on its side. Make sure air filter and carburetor are up.
TO REMOVE DRIVE BELT - Page 13 - Turn lawn mower on its side with air filter and carburetor down.
And then there was silence...any customer service would be great at this point.
Regards,
Bryan
