It is upsetting that you are having these concerns.
Some water coming back towards the engine and on top of the deck is to be expected.
Using the washout you should let the unit cool first,
move the mower to a hard or already mowed surface
connect and turn on the water,
make sure hose is not under the mower
start the engine allow to run till clean water is observed
shut the engine off
turn off and disconnect the water hose
start and run mower to dry it, allow unit to run several minutes
If the engine was cool when you started, it will not have chance to get hot with the water hitting it. Also the engines are aluminum not cast iron so should not crack do to water contact.
