    Question:
    Hello,

I am a tree climber; topping, pruning, removals etc. I live in Oregon and just purchased a new 338 xpt California, (it has a compliance sticker for 2009) for the sum of $450...I was unaware of the difference between the California model and the standard 338 xpt. (Buyer beware I guess) Will there be a loss in power from the standard? The saw was purchased very recently and I am contemplating it's return...I have not even used the saw but am somewhat bummed, that I have a saw that conforms to CA standards when it is not applicable in the state I reside, and may reduce the capability I greatly depend on. I have an old 335 xpt that still runs but it is getting long in the tooth, although it's a great little saw perhaps I should stick with it. Any information that could be provided pertaining to the differences between the 338 xpt California and the standard 338 xpt would be greatly appreciated. Cheers, Lee

    This is a great question.

Originally there were two different 338XPT units, California and the other 49 states. The California had a larger displacement cylinder (45cc). The 49 state model (38cc) 338XPT has since with in the last year or so has replaced the California only model, this gives us a common model for all 50 states. The 335XPT is the oldest of the generation of the top handle saws and has an even smaller cylinder displacement. So in part I am puzzled by the comment buyer beware, the California models comply to an even higher level of emission regulation than the other 49 states adhere to. The California models can be sold in all states where if there is a unit for the 49 states they can not be sold in California.
