The procedure is as follows,
First remove the negative cable to prevent shock, then remove the positive.
Remove the battery hold down bracket.
Then you should be able to pull the battery out of it's compartment.

Unfortunately this would work and normally would work but this model tractor has a support bracket for the mower blade in the way and the battery cannot be forced by! Design flaw???

Are you trying to remove the battery from the underside of the machine? If yours is under the hood/behind the dash there should only be one bracket to remove from the top of the battery compartment. Then it should slip right out. Is there anyway you can send a picture of the battery in your machine?
I removed the battery the hard way - by removing the screws to the batterty holding case. This worked and an answer from Ariens just gae this same answer. It would be nice if the owner manual was the same as the tractor.
