    Question:
I have a 325 RJ X Series trimmer. The recoil on the starter broke and I am trying to replace it. I have reassembled the recoil and cord properly but I am having trouble reassembling the housing. There is a small black plastic piece that is spring loaded that engages the recoil when you pull the cord. I can't seem to get it replaced properly so that the housing will fit properly to reassemble. Any suggestions?

John, I am thinking the black plastic piece you are referring to is the "Starter pawl"  part #(503-87-35-02), see attached diagram. If everything is assembled correctly the case and starter should go right back onto the engine. I have seen on some starters where you need to pull out about 1/2 the starter cord, and then as your assembling it, release or let the cord slowly rewind so that it can engage the starter pawl. I hope this helps!

Karl, Thank you for your advice. I had placed the "Starter prawl" in the wrong hole. The starter prawl goes in the hole opposite the hole with the slot next to it as shown in the diagram. Your advice on pulling the cord out half way did the trick - everything went right back in easily. Thanks again.
