    Question:
I want to buy my brother a new Chain Saw. He lives in upstate new york and heats his house with a wood stove and supplements it with propane heat. He is not a rancher or professional tree cutter but a normal home owner who goes through about 6 or 7 cords of firewood each winter. Right now he buys most of it already cut and split but he wants to buy log length firewood and cut it himself in the future.

What size or model chainsaw should I consider? Does he need a professional model? I would like to get him something that starts easily, runs well, lasts long, and is powerful enough to get the job done but not too heavy or unwieldy.

Recommendations on engine size, bar size, or specific models would be greatly appreciated. I hope to find an authorized Husqvarna dealer near his home that can service the chainsaw in the future but I might have to purchase the saw from a dealer near my home.

Thanks in advance for your help.

      Rafael,

I wish you would have asked me how to repair a saw, rather than buying one. There are just too many choices, but based on your description, and reading some of the reviews, here is what I would suggest:

      1. First go to the products page for chain saws, next click on the Tab for compare. I would suggest the "Homeowner" series of chainsaws based on the amount of wood being cut, (6-7 cords a year).

      2. Look at some of the reviews of others and the overall review rating (ie. a 4.5 or 5 rating is definitely good)

      3. You mentioned easy start, some of the chainsaws have "smart start" which are reportedly easier starters.

      4. Engine size, Bar size, and Specific Model: The engine range in the homeowner series is between 38 CC's to 60 CC's , A nice Midway engine CC value would be about 45 CC's, its not too small and Not too big. recommended Bar size around 16-18 inches.

      5. Lasting long: That will depend on use and Not abuse, maintaining the saw from year to year  (changing spark plug. air filter, fuel filter etc), keeping the saw sharp and oiled, and proper fuel mixtures. I also believe in having a good storage case for the saw, without one it will kick around the garage or basement, get dirty and dusty. The saws that  I have worked on, and that were maintained and stored in a case, seemed to always start from year to year, maybe just a coincidence.

Anyhow with all of that said, If I were looking for a saw with your description, I would take a good look at the Husqvarna 445 with smart start.

      I hope this helps!
