Hi and thanks for using the Answer Army to post your question.
Basically there are only three things needed to make one of these machines run.
1) Fuel
2) Spark
3) Compression
Without looking at the machine it's hard to tell what could be wrong. Several questions come to mind.
1) As you stated, make sure you have good/new gas with the proper fuel mix. Gas with ethanol will evaporate and turn to water in your gas tank. If the gas has sit any longer than a few weeks it may become non-volatile, and will not burn.
2) You can check your spark plug and make sure it is gaped properly. I don't know what model machine you have but the gap should be listed in your owners manual. The average for a hand held unit is a 0.6mm gap, but check your manual. Also make sure the plug isn't fouled out and is clean. You can also check your spark by keeping using a spark tester. That will determine if your plug or your ignition module is working properly.
3) Was it hard to pull the starter rope? If it was too easy you have a lack of compression and the cylinder is most likely scored. But considering the age of the machine I don't think this is your problem.
Check these items and one of them should be your fix. If you can't find any of these helpful to you, you may need to take your machine to an authorized service center. You can find one online at /images/us/homeowner/dealers/dealer-locator/ or you can call our customer support line at 1-800-487-5951 and we can locate one for you.
I hope this helps and thanks again for using the Answer Army
