    Question:
    H80 chain sharpening problems.
    Details:

I need help filing down the wide track depth gauge on the H80 chain. I bought a file guide tool (#505243501) but for the life of me I can't figure out how the bent flange of the depth gauge is suppose to fit through the ' T ' shaped hole.

Help?!? the Husqvarna site has nothing on this topic.

    Thanks,

    Frank

      Frank,

I think you are correct the gauge will not fit the H80 safety chain to flat file and adjust the rakers, and I have the same gauge also.

However, I use the Oregon sharpening gauge, shown in the attached file picture, the gauge is in the lower center of the picture and next to the flat file. The gauge has a recess where the flat file will fit and file down the depth gauge rakers to the proper height. Also the picture is a complete sharpening kit, but the gauge can be purchased separately. I also really like the Oregon sharpening gauge its so easy to use, just my opinion.

      I hope this helps.

PS. I am Not a Husqvarna Representative or an Authorized Repair Center, Just an experimental chainsaw person.

        Thank you Karla!

That's very helpful, I've seen the Oregon kit before, but I just wanted to see what options/suggestions Husqvarna or other owners have. I'll get a Oregon guide today.

        Thanks again!

      Frank,

I am glad the info was helpful, also If I can be a little critical of your sharpened chain picture.

It appears but it also could be the camera angle too, that the front and top edge of your cutting tooth is slightly rounded. This is Not good, and will not give you the most effective sharpness of the chain.

If you look at the top of the cutting tooth, you will see a perfectly straight but at an angle score mark on each tooth, this  is both a gauge of the angle, and also a manufacture mark to not sharpen the tooth beyond that point.

Your sharpening angle looks real good, but again looking at the photo, the front edge looks like its starting to curve when compared to that straight gauge mark. You can take a flat file and with a very lite cut, and straighten that front edge so its not curved, but then you will also have to re-do the gullet with a round file and sharpen the tooth.

Remember, the top of the cutting tooth should look just like a sharpend flat chisel  at an angle with a straight edge and the bevel facing downward, I hope this helps.

Its really a very minor detail but will definitely make a big difference on your effective sharpness!

        Hi Karla,

You're absolutely correct, constructive criticism, I like it!! :)

It's just like Xacto blades, unless it's 'pointy' it won't cut clean. Thanks for the suggestion, I've got some filing to do!

      Frank,

Glad  the criticism was Ok for you, I just took a close up picture (see attached file) of my chainsaw teeth.

Please excuse the dirty floor mat under the bar, the chain is mounted on the bar but I got a very close, close up, so that you could see the top profile of the teeth, I included a left and right cutter also.

I just want to make sure you know what curve is not there, its nice and straight across the top front of the tooth.

      I hope this helps
