    Question:
I found the large nut holding down the magneto toothed gear to be loose - (I could remove it with my fingers!) Lowes mower technician says it should be good and tight. What problems can occur if one mows with that condition? I have had the machine since November and began to notice a clacking sound. Underneath, the bolt on the blade was also loose.
    Thanks for a response.

Without your equipment numbers it is only a guess about what your referring to. Please post them and I see if I can give you the torque specs for this nut and bolt.

If your talking about the flywheel nut being loose then it will shear the key that keeps the flywheel and crankshaft in time. Once the key is sheared then your mower will no longer run as the ignition system will be out of time. The bolt should also be re-tighten as prevent damage that end too.

Please don't just tighten without using a torque wrench as you can cause more damage as overtighting the flywheel nut can cause the flywheel to crack and split as it is mounted on a tapered shaft.
