    Question:
I have been told that a trimmer should only be run at the speed necessary to cut weeds without bogging down. I have also been told to run the trimmer at maximum speed when trimming. Which is the best speed for trimming grass/weeds? I have a Husqvarna 323L.

Everybody will have their own opinion which is best. Using a string trimmer is like anything else. It takes time for the user to learn what speeds are best whichever type cutting you do.

Here I use near idle for trimming around young trees and tender plants. I use mid speed for short grasses and full speed when I clearing ditch rows with very tall grass. There is really no one speed that is right for every use and this is what I have learned my 40 years of using them..

My suggestion is just use the trimmer and you learn as you go as what is needed.
