    Question:
I bought a new Rancher 460 and after about an hour of use was doing great, had new chain, so had adjusted for slack 3 times, when it threw chain. Chain brake mechanism appears to now be stuck with brake on, cannot get it to disengage; engine fires up great just no chain action. Anyone else have this problem?

      Patrick,

First, I would suggest getting a New or Spare good chain, usually when the chain jumps off the bar it twists the drive links making the chain improperly fit on the bar without forcing the chain back into the bar groove.

Next, I suspect when the chain jumped off the bar that it engaged the brake band inside the clutch cover, and then the clutch cover was removed while it was engaged, so you will need to reset the brake band inside the cover in order to re-install the cover properly.

Here is answer army link to a previously posted question about resetting the brake band:

Also, you may find it easier to place the chainsaw on its side when you do this, that way the clutch cover can be placed flat down on top of the bar bolts. Do not worry about the back end of the clutch cover, just focus on holding the front part of the clutch cover, and holding it snug against the brake handle engagement. With it held in place operate the brake handle and this should reset your brake band.

Remember, whenever removing the clutch cover to "always" make sure the brake is disengaged or in the reset position.

Also, I'm not real sure what caused the initial problem of the chain jumping off the bar, but I would definitely check the lubrication of the chain, when you get it back together with a New chain, check that the chain is correctly tensioned, and "Do Not retension a chain on a hot bar", wait till the bar and chain cool down before re-tensioning, finally I would also check that the drive sprocket, the bar, and chain all match together. The Model 460 is available in two different pitches .325, and 3/8 pitch which means the drive sprocket which is labled either .325 or 3/8 has to match the bar that is labeled .325 or 3/8. and finally the chain pitch has to match the .325 or 3/8. I hope this makes sense.

      I hope this helps

PS. I am Not a Husqvarna Representative or Authorized Repair, Just an experimental chainsaw person

      Patrick,

I missed the fact that you stated this was a new chainsaw, In which case I might suggest taking it to a Husqvarna Repair Center for their evaluation, and to find out what may have caused the problem.

Took it to the dealer, they say the transport washers were left in; odd thing is didn't see any there when I put the bar on..... nor would they have been loose when I removed the plate to be noticed. Most company use colored or cardboard washer etc, guess not in this case. Upshot is it screwed up the PLASTIC chain brake handle, NOT Covered under warranty.... chain also FUBAR.

Husqvarna really ought to look at the issue with the chain brake handle stripping, apparently a common issue and not ever covered under warranty as near as I can find....

      Patrick,

Thanks for the update, and feedback. Also glad you got it working again!

I work on alot of different chainsaws, and all of them have plastic brake handles now, also a lot of the carburetor controls like choke, start, stop switch are all plastic, even some of the carburetor inside components like metering lever, I have seen in plastic too!

Anyhow, enjoy the Model 460, Its a great chainsaw, and keep it cleaned after use, and well lubricated and oiled, Don't  forget to always use good fresh  gas (ie. 93 octane or better) and the proper engine oil mix ratio, really important. Don't store the chainsaw for long periods ( ie. 3 months or more) with gas inside the tank, just empty it out when storing and put fresh gas/ oil mixture in when ready to use again.

Just a few tips, and hope they help.

Welllll, not actually working again, still in the shop, Part supposedly came in yesterday, supposedly started installing today, supposedly will be ready sometime next week, then maybe will find out cost of repair as they say not covered by warranty. Next time will just disconnect the chain brake so I can get some work done instead of now nearly 2 weeks and counting behind on getting these trees cleared.  Not impressed yet with it.
