I would check the valve clearances first. They should be .004" - .006" cold at 1/4" past TDC compression stroke. When the valves get out adjustment the decompression system no longer work at startup making it hard to manually start the engine and sometime even starters can't get past the compression stroke.
As for not starting with the key, it not doing anything or is just hitting the compression stroke and stopping?

Thanks for the response, as for
the key, it cranks with no problem
and i can smell gas but no start.
Then i use pull rope and it backfires.
do you think the valves are causing
engine to stall when blades engage?

Sorry you the slow response I am in the process of packing up to move to a new home.
Although valves can cause problems like this, it is more likely your having a different problem than I was thinking. Try installing a known good spark plug and see if that resolves the problem. I had an engine that was backfiring and had lack of power when engaging the deck. I thought I had a blown head gasket but it ended up being just a bad spark plug.
When your saying it backfires is it through the carburetor or out of the muffler?

Thank you for the response,I think
your right about the valves so Im
taking it for service. I did just put
a new plug in to rule that out. It
does lack power and engine seems
hotter then normal. When it backfires
its coming from exhaust. Carb kit was
Done n breather tube was replaced, tube
was dry rotted.( Possibly y valves out of
adjustment?) GL with new home!
Thank you
