    Question:
I have a new model 545 chainsaw that won't restart once it's warm. I have to wait overnight until it's completely cool to start again. What's the trick to restart the warm engine?

this issue could be a very tough nut to crack. but may be very simple also.  because you have a new saw, I think we will go straight to the problem.  if you are willing to perform a couple of tests, then I can help resolve this issue.

1st test.  start the saw and allow it to run for the length of time it takes to cause the "no re-start" however long that is. now shut it down.

before attempting a re-start do not push the CRV in. please leave the valve closed. secure the saw properly and slowly pull tension on the recoil and then with the choke gate on or in the closed position, give it a sharp yank, once only.  now open the gate, (choke off) and any subsequent pulls with choke off.  lets see what happens.

Thanks for the detail approach to looking at the problem.  When looking at that choke setup I got to wondering how the start throttle worked since I couldn't lock the trigger to a start position.  A closer (fourth or fifth) read of the starting instructions does mention to push the combination choke/stop/throttle lever all the way down.  Doing everything exactly as they say has the saw working perfectly every time.

I think the basic problem for me was that with the lawyers writing the instruction manual that there are so many bogus instructions and warnings that it's hard to get to the stuff you really can use.

glad to hear it.  you are welcome sir. give a shout when you encounter any issue that may be difficult to resolve.  if you keep the saw empty and clean, that alone usually prevents the majority of problems that we encounter.  I repair/re-build saws professionally, but I do not represent Husqvarna...

      Don,

I also have a new Model 545 Autotune, and Have a similar problem on occassion.

I have found maybe 1 out of 10 times when I shut the engine down while its warm, and then try the warm re-start procedure in the OM manual, that it won't start. So here is what I discovered: Leave the choke off, and follow the warm start procedure but also hold the throttle trigger wide open, and give it one hard pull, It has always started.

I have Not done the forensic diagnosis of why it does this, but I'm thinking with the autotune when the engine is shut down hot, the carburetor gets  little extra fuel when shut down, which puts it on the verge of being flooded. So hence the wide open throttle provides alot of air to the engine, and is a great way to start a flooded engine.

Again it doesn't do this every time, just maybe once in ten shutdowns with a hot engine, but now I can re-start a hot engine on one pull.

      I hope this helps.

        Thanks Karla,

That sounds logical and I'll use that.  It really helps to understand how things work to figure out how to use something.  I had thought it should have a full throttle at start up, but I can't lock it open like the old saws could.  I appreciate your input.

      Don,

Since we have the same chainsaws, I would be interrested If you encounter any future problems with the Model 545, please keep me in mind.

I have been very happy with my new chainsaw, I actually received it in June 2014, but since I have several other Husqvarna chainsaws, I only have a few hours on the Model 545. Two days ago I used a combination of my Model 455 Rancher with a 20" bar & 3/8 chisel chain, and my Model 545 with a 16" bar & .325 chisel chain to cut down a 16" diameter black oak tree about 60 ft tall. I did all the limbing and some bucking with the Model 545 and then all bucking with larger diameter logs using the Rancher. I really believe the Model 545 out performed the Model 455, which is amazing it just cut like butter, and I was done with that tree in about an hour.

Also when I have some time, I am going to try and do some experimentation or some forensic diagnostics with my Model 545, so I will keep you in mind If I discover anything.

One other thought I had about the autotune, Is if the engine is really warmed up thoroughly and then running at full throttle, and within a second or two is shut off using switch, compared to What If the engine at the same temperature is allowed to idle for 30 seconds to a minute before shutting it down, will it make a difference on a warm re-start ?  A typical chainsaw, the answer is No, restart is the same but maybe there is a difference because of the Autotune. Anyhow when I have some time I have a Infrared temperature detector, and also a thermocouple and tachometer, so I will connect them up to my Model 545 and run some different tests to see what happens. Again, I will let you know the results, but just not sure when I'll have time to get it done.

Thanks for your feedback, and I'm sure my re-start method will work, if it doesn't Please let me know. And Yes it is a little awkward to hold the throttle trigger full open without a lock, and pull on the starter cord. So just be careful doing it, I also always start my chainsaws on the ground, and not off my hip or in the air.

      I hope this helps.
