    Question:
I have a IZ4217. I am trying to replace my drive belt. I can't figure out how to get the new belt past the bracket next to the bottom pulley toward the rear of the tractor. As I'm sure you know the bottom pulley is for the blade belt. There is an electrical connection in between the ump per and lower pulleys.
The bracket I'm talking about bolts to the frame and the bottom of the motor.

    Thanks
    Jon

You need to either unbolt the PTO anti-spin bracket bracket or remove the PTO clutch assembly for drive belt replacement. If you should remove the PTO clutch the center bolt will need to be re-torqued to 55 ft-lbs. Either way make sure the anti-spin is fully engage in the PTO clutch or it clutch will spin pulling it wires out; destroying the clutch electrical connections.

On some mowers the PTO clutch has to remove anyway so the drive belt pulley be slipped down to put the belt on as the belt retainers are formed as part of the frame.

Eugene, Thank you for the response.  The wires that go to the PTO  have a connector, Is there a trick to separating the connector?  Also it's a very tight fit where the nuts are holding the bracket on.  Is there a special tool or wrench you would suggest?  Is it metric of standard?

        Thank you again!

Depending on how long they been connected they can be rather hard to separate. Also there is a locking tab on them that must dislodged.

As for PTO bracket bolts they should be SAE versions or the same as the rest of the frame bolts. For the those bolts on the bracket try a swivel joint between your socket and extension.

Personally I prefer the PTO removal path instead when the PTO isn't stuck on.

If I take the PTO off, how to I keep the Motor from turning to loosen the bolt holding the pulley on?

            Thanks

Sorry taking a while to respond been in the shop working on a Stihl fs45 trimmer.

Look at area where the center bolt is a lot time there is double flat spacer that a 1-3/8 open ended wrench will fit. If not then you must remove the engine shroud so you access the flywheel starter ring gear so prevent it from turning by blocking it. Actually the removal is easier as an impact can loosen it. It is torque back to 55 ft-lbs that is harder.

Most newer clutches now has the double flat spacer which is much better for us techs to deal with.

If I engage the blade knob will that keep the engine from turning?

        Thanks

I have an impact and a torque wrench.  I'll give it a try as soon as I get home.

          Thank you for your help

OK  I went home at lunch and there is a washer with 2 flat sides.  When I take that bolt out will both pulleys come off? Or just the lower pulley and the PTO?

        Thanks

Most times the upper pulley will stay in place as long the drive belt is on. Once you remove the drive belt the pulley may want to come off which is no big deal as it is keyed. One thing to watch for is that there may be spacer on top that pulley and it go on only one way properly although it can be on upside down. You usually can tell if it is backwards as the drive belt will not align as it should.

Note there should be some anti seize compound on the crankshaft. Do not wipe this off as it is need when when re-installing the PTO clutch assembly.

One more question.  I took the PTO off no problem.  Do I need to take the idler pulley off to install the new belt?  I'm having problems figuring out how to route the belt

      Thanks

I look up the owners manual this morning for the belt routing. Here is the instruction from it.

Using a 1/2” drive ratchet inserted into the square hole in
the pump idler arm relieve the tension on the pump
belt and remove belt. To reinstall belt. Swing pump
idler pulley out toward engine to route belt around
it. Then route belt around right side pulley first as
you are looking up from the underside of machine.
Reinstall idler spring and use the ratchet to rotate
idler so the belt may be installed all the way around
        the last pulley.
