    Question:
new carb for 128cd or fix current?
    Details:

My wife & I just purchased a new house a few months ago and was given this used trimmer as a gift. It worked pretty well for a few uses. It would die after about 20 minutes of use. I would crack it again and have trouble but after a little while it would start working fine. I only use it about 20-30 minutes for the front and back yard.

Once the gas tank was empty I looked inside and saw the line was torn and there were small pieces of line in there. the fuel filter was not attached to it's hose. I'm not sure how long it was like that? I replaced the hose with a new filter and ran OK for a little while but would bog down and shut off.

I should also mention it would never idle right. the head was always moving and sometimes at a fast pace. I took apart the carb and used carb cleaner to clean it out. put everything back together and cranked it. It ran but ran very very rich. no low idle, head constant spinning and would eventually bog down and shut off. I was taking it apart again and noticed the filter on the side had a hole from when it was running really hot. The fuel line also came undone on it's own from the carb when I was about to take it apart and now need to replace that because it will not stay on.

I dremeled the metal surrounding the idle screws and adjusted it but now won't turn over to even adjust it.

My thinking is just buy a new carb. plenty of success stories on getting a new carb installed but would I need to adjust the idle settings on a new carb?

btw, my local dealer charges $70 to look and diagnostic. return $35 if I deny work after they find something. if it's under $70, no other charges to fix if. over $70 in parts to fix they'll notify before moving forward. mechanic said right now they have about a 3-4 week response time.

they do sell the carb for about $35.

Maybe I should raise my rates.....

Since you have now have carburetor that is no longer EPA complaint which any confident shop would insist that you replace it as they don't wish to be caught and fine heavily by the EPA for allowing equipment to remain in service as is.  Google pn 545081848 and you can find them for $30 including shipping. And yes sometimes new carburetor need tuning but limiters already installed you should a good shop to install and tune it for you.

Too bad you destroyed a perfectly good carburetor by not knowing what you were doing. A simple cleaning, diaphragms, gaskets, and good tuning is all it probably needed. Even if you needed the carburetor rebuild kit, it is only $10-$12 installed plus an hour's labor in my shop; of course replacing is little more for parts.  And believe or not the customer still gripes.

thanks for the reply. am I not able to tune the carb any to see if I can get it in the right spot or should I just go ahead and purchase the one you recommended? thanks.

This is your decision to make but the following is what I think is wrong and what needs to be done if I was repairing the carburetor.

The current problem is that the carburetor needs to be disassemble, cleaned, internal filter screen replaced, metering lever height set correctly and new diaphragms and gaskets installed. This is because first the fuel lines had failed allowing small pieces to enter the carburetor. The reason for the new gaskets and diaphragms is that these also go bad over time. The metering diaphragm especially will harden and become non working.

Most novices will use carburetor cleaner and compress air to clean these carburetors. This is a mistake as the carburetor cleaner will damage the delicate check valves as well as the compress air will do. Some of these check valves are as small 1 mm. The best way to clean these carburetors is with soap and water in an ultrasonic cleaning machine then put it through a rinse cycle to remove the soap residues. Once this done and the carburetor is good and dry then the mixture adjusters are set at 1-1/2 turns from lightly seat position. From there the GND kit is installed, the engine is started warmed up a few minutes and then the final carburetor mixtures tuning is done.
