my rancher55 is 10or12 years old. it has not had hard use'trim trees and such. has started well till this year' cant pull the starter fast enough to start'if i pull the plug it pulls good. it does not have a pressure release. mike
I have seen older saws where the recoil starter pulley would bind under compression to center support stud. Try checking it for contamination, clean and lightly oil this pivot point and see if this helps; otherwise it may need may need a new starter assembly.
Another option to consider if cylinder has the option of a CRV (compression release valve) is to add it. Several of these cylinders had a removable plug in CRV port that could be change over but not all of them.

solid advice from Eugene. another thing to check is the spark arrestor screen. the engine must be able to exhale freely.
