    Question:
Spent last trying to figure out why my chainsaw brake no longer stops the chain. Took it apart figuring something was broken, but it isn't. In fact everything looks perfect. Took some pictures of it engaged and not engaged ( actually the fact that I can take the cover off /on when the brake is engaged is a bad sign. You can see below the brake appears to do everything it's supposed to, the circular strap is pulled tighter when engaged, but not tight enough ? I can't even imagine which part to replace. Any ideas what is wrong here ?

Check the brake band itself for breakage.

When it engage like it is there should be clearance around the out of the band and I see none. Only thing I can suggest it to replace the band or the whole chain brake assembly as there is a problem somewhere there.

Thank you for the reply.. I agree. But makes no sense, it tightens a little, is not broken or as you can see from these picts that the position of the band does change. I have no problem replacing the assembly ( except getting that spring in is a major pain ), but want to make sure that's the issue.

I think I see where it is broken. It appears the hook end at the knee break end is broken.

Sounds like the best theory I've heard yet only wonder if you compare the on / off pictures the band moves. I would think if the hook where detached it wouldn't move, no ?

What I'm thinking is that the flat section is just before the hook is where the break is and the grooved nylon block is just sliding on it with band moving a little until it catches on the housing.

There is only one way to find out for sure and that is to the remove the spring and knee assembly and Yes it will very hard to put back. I use a clutch inside the brake band then install the spring so I can reset the tripped knee joint. Even then it not easily installed; lots of tension on that spring.

Agree 100%...  It's a simple mechanism, the band must have failed in some way not obvious. There's just no other explanation. Ordered the part already so when I take it apart I'll have something to replace it with. This is the 2nd time it's broken on that saw.. Not sure why , It's not like I'm using it everyday. Not looking forward to doing that spring, last time It drove me nutty getting it in there.

Thanks Eugene for taking the time to reply and think about my problem !!!!!!
