    Question:
New Husqvarna 550XP hard to start
    Details:

I followed the starting instructions exactly and it's still hard to start. I noticed that the decompression valve doesn't do anything and so I checked the compression with it on and off and both gave a low reading. Only about 135 with no difference. My old Poulan reads 150 and 562xp reads a healthy 175. Could the decompression valve be leaking?

      Sam,

      Yes -

I would remove the decompression valve and check that it is fully closing, and not possibly plugged with some carbon. Use a 13 mm scrench,( some times its the same tool as the bar nut tool),  or use a 13 mm deep socket, and unthread the decompression valve, Its just like removing a spark plug. Then when you have it in your hand, you can look at the seat of the valve and see if its fully closing.

You can also manually open and close the decompression valve by pushing in the open direction, and then pushing on the valve seat in the close direction. If you have an air compressor, you can try blowing some air up thru the open seat, and it should blow out thru a small hole in the side of the valve.

If you have a (0-5) lb kitchen food scale, I would be curious how many Oz /Lbs it takes to open and close the valve. Just hold the decompression valve in the middle, and push it down on the scale (first in the open direction) and record the scale reading (Typically Open should be about 1.5 lbs or less), then do the same in the close direction, It could be as much as 2 or 3 lbs. Then Post the numbers here, and I have an Excel spreadsheet calculator which will tell me if your decompression valve is good or not.

Please let me know if this helps!
