I'm having the same problem.  I took the recoil apart and the pulley is made of plastic and is shredded.  I ordered a new pulley (the trimmer is a year old but the warranty doesn't cover the recoil according to the literature that came with the trimmer) which is the same lousy plastic.  I installed it and it bench tested just fine, but when installed on the trimmer and I pulled the rope the first time, it shredded the new pulley as well....great.

I did some research and this model is notorious for recoil starter problems.  It is a known bad design but I can't find any reference on what parts are necessary to repair it, or if the correct parts are even available.  My guess is the plastic housing needs to be replaced because that seems to be the source of the problem
