Thanks for your input Eugene. It seems to me that if you keep an eye on chain tension they are not really needed.

Thanks Eugene,
Thanks Eugene for your help.
I have ordered a rim type and also another spur type, both in 3/8 in. I just discovered that the new one I bought last week is a .404. and I'm not sure what chain to get for that. I'll make one of them work. I got my new chain bar teoday an FT 380- 68 .50 gauge. It seems to mount OK. I lost my guide plates though and Husqvarna has quit making them. It's hard to find used ones! I did find a web site written in Slovic that had the 501244201 but I can't read Slovic and they seem to take only Euro's...... LOL
Any ideas where I can get pair of those guide plates? http://demetra.ruf.si/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=931
Thanks Eugene, I think I'll go with the heavy duty though it may be a bit tougher to find the .058 gauge chains.
OK....... I counted the teeth in the roller nose and it is 11, so I will assume with the information you posted, this is a 3/8 pitch sprocket. As for the year of the saw, it could very well be a 1981. I originally bought the saw to cut fire wood for my home (North Michigan) wood burning furnace. In 1982 I moved to Florida and the saw was rarely used. In 1984 I took my "Husky 65" to a local dealership to get my chain sharpened . What happened next turned into local chainsaw lore....... More on that story later. This chainsaw is a freak, an old friend, and irreplaceable. Hurricane Irma took down some old Oak trees at my home. My old reliable Husky made short work of the cleanup process! I have to cuss "Irma" for what she did to our state, but kiss her for re-kindling my love for this awesome saw !
Thanks so much for your help.
PS I'm not sure if this is the proper place to share this saw's story. If it's OK to post it here I will.
Thanks for your help Karla. I counted the drive links and there are 60. The links are larger than some I've seen though. The bar measures 18 1/2 inches laying flat and removed from saw.
Is there an advantage to having a .058 gauge? One of my concerns is that the new bar and chain do not ruin the 7 tooth drive sprocket that is incorporated as one piece into the clutch drum ? I'm not sure what gauge came with the saw originally? Is there any way of determining what year my saw was made by the indicated serial # in the above photo ?
Thanks Eugene for your help
The over all length of my bar is 18 1/2 inches. That measurement is with the bar removed from the saw and laying flat.
Thanks for your help.
Here is a picture of the chain bar. The numbers are a bit fuzzy in the photo. I hope this helps.
